HDFC Bank Parivartan Expands Water Access and Conservation Efforts Across India
HDFC Bank’s CSR programme, Parivartan, has built and restored more than 15,289 water structures across India, reaching over 10,430 villages and supporting nearly 14.92 lakh households. In addition, more than 950 villages have gained access to safe drinking water through community purification systems.
The initiative includes the construction and revival of farm ponds, check dams, rainwater harvesting systems, and local water distribution structures such as jal minars. In parts of central India, lift irrigation systems and recharge wells have also been developed to improve water access for tribal farming communities. For drinking water, the programme has installed purification units using technologies such as UV and RO filtration, based on local water quality.
Alongside infrastructure, the programme supports farmers with improved agricultural practices. These include micro irrigation systems, shade net farming, and training in efficient water use. Such measures have helped increase irrigation coverage, reduce dependence on rainfall, and improve crop productivity.
The programme also focuses on community involvement. Village-level plans are developed with the participation of women’s self-help groups and local water user associations to ensure that projects meet local needs. Planning is supported by GIS-based tools, and efforts are aligned with government schemes such as MGNREGA to increase impact.
HDFC Bank states that its water conservation work has been ongoing for over a decade. In the financial year 2024–25, it formally introduced Natural Resource Management as a key focus area, bringing together water conservation, afforestation, soil health, and solar energy initiatives.
Parivartan works across six main areas, including rural development, education, healthcare, and financial inclusion. As of March 2025, the programme has reached over 10.56 crore people across India. During FY 2024–25, HDFC Bank reported a CSR expenditure of ?1,068.03 crore under the initiative.
