Canon Adopts Its 11th Village in West Bengal Under Community Development Initiative
The company’s ‘Adopt a Village’ programme will focus on education, eye care, environmental initiatives and empowerment in Tongtala, Baruipur.
Canon India has adopted Tongtala village in Baruipur, West Bengal, as the 11th village under its ‘Adopt a Village’ initiative, expanding a community development programme that the company says has been running since 2012.
The initiative will focus on four areas—education, eye care, environment and empowerment—alongside infrastructure development. According to Canon India, the interventions will be based on local needs, with the company working with residents and local stakeholders to identify priorities.
The adoption was announced on September 30, 2026, at a ceremony attended by Toshiaki Nomura, President and CEO of Canon India, and representatives of Humana People to People India.
While the announcement outlines the programme’s broad areas of focus, it does not specify the individual projects planned for Tongtala, their budgets or implementation timelines. Details on how the community’s needs will be assessed and how progress will be measured have also not been provided.
Canon’s approach combines social development with environmental interventions. In Tongtala, the four-part framework is intended to support access to education and eye care, environmental protection and opportunities for community empowerment. The company has also said that the programme aims to strengthen self-reliance and community resilience.
Since its launch in 2012, Canon India says the initiative has reached more than 300,000 people, with over 12,000 employee volunteers participating across its adopted villages. The company has positioned the programme as a long-term effort rather than a one-time intervention.
For Tongtala, the next step will be translating these broad commitments into work that responds to local priorities. The extent of the programme’s impact will depend on the interventions implemented, the participation of residents and the outcomes achieved over time.
