180 students collect 300 bags of legacy plastic waste in Mumbai
Mumbai, August 30, 2026: Around 180 students, including NCC cadets and NSS volunteers, participated in a plastic waste collection and segregation drive at Ismail Yusuf College in Mumbai on August 22, collecting around 300 bags of discarded legacy plastic waste from the surrounding area.
The drive was organised by Media Fusion and Crain Communications, organisers of Plastics Recycling Show India (PRSI) and Bharat Recycling Show (BRS), in association with Keshav Srushti and Ismail Yusuf College.
The collected plastic will be sent for recycling and converted into recycled plastic benches, which will subsequently be provided to Ismail Yusuf College. The initiative is intended to demonstrate a circular approach in which collected waste is processed into a usable product for the same community involved in the collection.
Students from the college participated alongside Keshav Srushti volunteers and members of the Media Fusion team. The activity included the collection and segregation of plastic waste, giving students direct involvement in the handling and processing of discarded material.
Vinay Nathani, Secretary, Keshav Srushti, said that involving students directly in waste collection can help them understand the consequences of plastic littering and encourage behavioural changes within families and communities.
Prof. Sameer Vairagi, NSS Programme Officer, Ismail Yusuf College, said the activity provided students with practical experience in environmental action and social responsibility.
For the organisers, the collection drive is part of efforts to extend the discussion around recycling beyond industry events and into educational institutions and local communities.
The initiative was held ahead of the 2026 editions of Plastics Recycling Show India and Bharat Recycling Show, which took place from August 31 to September 2 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai. The events brought together recyclers, manufacturers, technology providers, policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss recycling and circularity in India.
